April 29 : Forgive or forget (Matthew 18:22)

Seventy-seven or seventy times seven—

now there’s a glossy quandary.

How can some clown write 77

when the others write 490?

If all I have to do is forgive my brother

(I have no sister) 77 times,

then I’ve filled my quota, for sure.

But if Jesus said 490, that’s once a week

for ten years (with a few weeks off).

Doesn’t seem human.

And why keep on forgiving? Aren’t we supposed to forget?

If I forget, I only have to forgive once.

Saves a lot of forgiving, this forgetting.

Maybe forgetting is the only way to forgive everyone

including myself. If I could only forget myself.
