April 20 : The view from Cassie’s balcony

From the balcony, now all she can see are dominoed buildings
beside the park beyond the skeletal trees, rising from mudflats.
When July comes, she won’t see through the foliage
jostling like tourists on the deck of a steamboat.
Maybe she’ll imagine the facades behind the ballistic greenery,
above the grass that’s grown without tending
under the feet of children playing in spring,
their ruckus rising to her balcony
to remind her summer has not yet come.
