I’m feeling less defensive about this question. It’s not a pop quiz or a ticket for a guilt trip. Whatever I’m reading at a particular time not only influences my thinking but also how I formulate my thoughts before putting them into words in the world. When I was reading Scott Cairns‘s Recovered Body, I wrote verse with a lot of rhythm and (mostly) unconscious spiritual meaning. When I reread Anne Carson‘s Glass, Irony, and God, I find my own poems are starker and reveal more of my perplexity with the world. Now I’m starting to read Dean Young‘s Elegy for Toy Piano, so don’t ask me what my writing will be like. I just like to see that other people write poems like I like to write.
